Top Ten Email Marketing Tips

Everyone who's ever had an email account has had to deal with it: The dreaded SPAM that builds up in an email account, especially if it's not checked on a daily basis. Yet, despite most people's downright disgust with SPAM, email is still an essential part of their lives.

And because of the prevalence of email in today's world, email marketing is still a popular way for online business owners to promote their products and services. However, if you opt to use email marketing, there are several tips you should keep in mind.

Never SPAM. If you live or have customers in the United States, you must know that according to the FCC SPAM is illegal. Even if SPAM isn't illegal in your country, avoid it altogether. SPAM will only serve to annoy prospective customers.

Avoid "spam-my"-type words. Sometimes emails are marked as SPAM simply for the words that are contained within the text. Always avoid such words as earn, money, and guarantee when you send emails to your list.

Don't use a free email account. People love free email accounts because they're, well, free. But, as a marketer, you cannot rely on a free email account for your email marketing purposes. Rather, you should purchase a domain name, and use your own, professional email account. Free email accounts shout "amateur," and because of their strict SPAM filters, free email accounts may mark your prospective and current customers' email as SPAM.

Build an opt-in list. Never send out unsolicited emails. Doing so constitutes SPAM. You must build an opt-in list. Create a squeeze page and offer all those who sign up for your list a special deal: a free report, a free ebook, or a free e-course. Make sure that your subscribers have to opt-in to your email list.

Purchase an autoresponder. An autoresponder is invaluable in ensuring your subscribers opt in to your list. You can purchase an autoresponder service from online businesses like Aweber.

Consider your customers' needs. Some people, either because of where they live or because of cost, still do not have access to high speed internet service, so they're still on dial-up. Offer your list the option of receiving both plain text and HTML emails. That way, those subscribers on-dial up won't have to wait impatiently for HTML emails to slowly load.

Email your list only periodically. Don't email your list every day, or else you risk annoying your potential customers. Rather, email them periodically, whether it's once a week or every other week.

Personalize all of your emails. Make sure your emails always have the recipients' name included in the title of the email to make them feel as though you're personally talking to them.

Offer your list valuable content. Don't just send your subscribers sales pitches. Rather, offer them niche-related content that will in some way benefit them.

Include an offer in your emails. If you have a product or a service, or if you know of a product or a service you think will benefit your customers, by all means include an offer in your emails. Just don't make it a habit to only send emails when you have an offer for your subscribers.
